Performance Evaluation of a Hybrid Solar Chimney-Photovoltaic System for Power Generation in Kuwait

A hybrid small scale solar chimney power plant consisting of a photovoltaic panel integrated with a solar chimney was investigated experimentally and numerically. The experimental model comprises a solar collector with a photovoltaic panel as an absorber, a chimney, and a convergent nozzle. The convergent nozzle, which connects the collector with the chimney, was used to further accelerate the air flow in the chimney. The air flow characteristics and heat transfer were further simulated numerically and compared with the experimental results. Results showed that the hybrid system produces solar efficiencies with 9 − 11% range, approximately two orders of magnitude higher than the typical solar chimney, whereas it increased by 18% when compared to the stand-alone PV panel. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the annual power output increases significantly with chimney height up to 8 m. A minor increase in output power with a negligible decrease in LCOE was expected for a further increase in size.
