Gallus Gallus Domesticus : Introduction
Microscopic Anatomy of Animals(2021)
Abstract
The chicken is a squat bird with a rounded appearance. Individuals are no taller than 0.7 m, weighing approximately 2.6 kg on average. Fleshy combs on the head and lobed wattles below the bills are among the differentiating features. Chickens have high, arched tails, which may be 0.3 m or more in length. Sexual dimorphism is remarkable. Males have sickle feathers in their tails and hackle feathers on their backs. Males typically exhibit bolder, brighter colors than the females. Species‐specific clucking sounds are characteristic of them.
