A Low-Profile Dual-band Circularly Polarized Cavity Antenna for Satellite Communications

This paper proposes a new dual-band cavity antenna that is circularly polarized and has high gain. This antenna is constructed by a novel dual-band asymmetric frequency-selective surface (FSS) and a 45-degree linearly-polarized dual-band patch antenna. A prototype for the C-band satellite communications is demonstrated. In the two impedance-matching bands, the antenna gains are higher than 9 dBic. In addition to the antenna performance, the shielding effectiveness (SE) of the added FSS acting as a shield is larger than 25 dB in the frequency range below 1 GHz.
