To avoid overtraining and to optimise well-being and performance in sports, it is pivotal to monitor athletes’ physical and mental recovery. This chapter will provide an overview of central terms associated with recovery-stress monitoring such as underrecovery, overtraining, and burnout. The focus of this chapter will be on the delineation of psychological tools for recovery-stress monitoring while highlighting the advantages, disadvantages, and potential scope of application for each psychometric instrument. The chapter will conclude with considerations on how to practically monitor athletes to maintain and even improve their psychological well-being.
