Abstract
Recent excavations at Surezha, a site in the Erbil Plain of Iraqi Kurdistan, are revealing the settlement history of this village from the late 6th through the mid-4th millennium BC (the Late Ubaid through Late Chalcolithic 4 periods). Throughout Prehistory, this region has had strong cultural links with Eastern Anatolia, Northwestern Iran, Western Syria, and Southern Mesopotamia, although the detailed chronology of such connections and their role in the rise of cities in Northern Mesopotamia are not yet sufficiently understood. We report here on an INAA compositional analysis of 32 Ubaid and LC1-LC3 ceramics from Surezha, an analysis representing the first stage in a study of the interaction between Surezha and other sites in the surrounding regions. The present analysis defines a provisional compositional signature for locally manufactured ceramics at Surezha and identifies a small number of samples that appear non-local in origin. This assessment builds a foundation for future studies of local ceramic production, regional distribution, and inter-regional exchange in the Erbil Plain during this crucial era in the process of urban development.
