•Cytotoxicity has been assessed in 175 studies focusing on new antileishmanial agents.•There is no uniformity in the choice of models and assays to assess cytotoxicity.•Host cell type, culture passage number and seeding density should be standardised.•Experimental parameters should be accurately detailed in research articles.•Recommendations for designing a cytotoxicity assay are provided.
