“I know it’s complicated”: Children detect relevant information about object complexity

•Children judged the helpfulness of information about an artifact’s complexity.•7–9-year-olds robustly favored relevant over irrelevant information.•5–6-year-olds only did so in cases of extreme relevance contrasts.•Children gradually develop the ability to detect which object features imply complexity.
