•T/ET was estimated by three models at global fluxnet sites.•Global mean annual T/ET is likely ca. 0.6.•The shuttleworth-wallace-hu model produced the most reliable magnitude and spatial variability.•LAI controls seasonal and cross-site variations in T/ET.•Factors controlling inter-annual variations in T/ET is complex.
