•Mild nickel substitution (y < 0.125) increases oxygen redox kinetics> 50% at 400–500 °C.•Nickel substitution limited by structural stability.•The oxygen vacancy formation energy decreases with nickel substitution.•NiO bonds in Sr1−xCaxFe1−yNiyO3 are elongated compared to FeO.
