•Defoliation by Gonipterus platensis is strongly related to climatic conditions.•Monospecific Eucalyptus globulus stands in mild weather conditions are more prone to attack.•This method enables to simulate G. platensis pest in Spanish Eucalyptus spp. stands.•Risk maps have been generated to aid the development of pest control programs.
