Abstract
•MgH2 reacts with 316 L stainless steel during ball milling under hydrogen pressure.•The reaction proceeded faster as compared to MgH2 with pure Fe.•Product possess cubic K2PtCl6 type structure similar to Mg2FeH6.•Mixture obtained after decomposition of the product absorbs hydrogen at − 50 °C.
