Cyclic behaviors of SHS columns subjected to small amplitude loading

•Cyclic tests were carried out on SHS columns under small amplitude loading.•Local buckling was observed in specimens subjected to small inelastic cycles.•Different deterioration behavior was found for cyclic small amplitude loading.•A stability limit representing the start of significant deterioration was proposed.•A method to predict the number of cycles until the stability limit was proposed.
