•GWAS for the number of teats were carried out in more than 1000 Italian Duroc pigs.•A QTL located on chromosome 7 (VRTN gene region) was identified.•A putative QTL located on chromosome 10 (FRMD4A gene region) was identified.•Detected QTL were already known to control this trait in other pig populations.
