Study of the pattern of reproductive allocation and fruit development in young dioecious trees of Idesia polycarpa Maxim

•In the dioecy Idesia polycarpa Maxim species, the males and females exist a significant difference in the reproductive allocation, and the number of inflorescences on architecture differs.•Annual reproduction of I. polycarpa, the inflorescence cluster production was 8.85% higher in females than males.•This is a new attempt to demonstrate that the impact of floral development on the architecture of male and female individuals and the allocation relationship between branch architecture (tier of branches, branch sections) and tree reproductive parts (fruiting spurs, short branches, and lateral terminal buds).
