•An alternative interpretation for the Mangaroon Orogeny (MO) is proposed.•Magmatic suite associated with MO is mapped into the east orogen for the first time.•(Meta-)Sedimentary intervals are reconsidered for their relation to the MO.•MO interpreted to be an overall strike-slip event with trans-tension and -pression.•A geodynamic model for the causes of the MO phases is described.
