Method of reconstructing two-dimensional velocity fields on the basis of temperature field values measured with a thermal imaging camera

•A numerical procedure for reconstructing a velocity field in free convection solely on the basis of a known temperature field is described.•Both theoretical considerations and numerical simulation tests are presented.•The usefulness of the method is experimentally validated.•The method can be used to auto-reconstruct velocity fields using thermal imaging cameras.
