•A reduced n-dodecane-n-butanol-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon model was developed.•Soot was reduced at higher n-butanol blending ratio and at lower ambient temperature.•The high oxygen content of n-butanol reduced soot by enhancing the soot oxidation.
