Quality assessment of innovative chitosan-based biopolymers for edible food packaging applications

•Chitosan edible films with chokeberry extracts addition show a significant antioxidant properties.•Obtained films can be used as natural optical filters against visible and ultraviolet light.•Increased solubility can potentially accelerate biodegradation of chitosan films.•Addition of chokeberry extracts enhance barrier properties by lowering water vapour and oxygen transmission rate.•Biopolymers modified with/containing chokeberry extracts can be multifunctional packaging preventing from food deterioration and waste.
