Manganese accumulation and tissue-level distribution in Australian Macadamia (Proteaceae) species

•Australian Macadamia species have the ability to take up high concentrations of manganese into their shoots.•Wild M. ternifolia, M. integrifolia, M. tetraphylla and M. jansenii are strong manganese accumulators.•Under the controlled conditions, high manganese accumulation was demonstrated for M. integrifolia and M. tetraphylla.•Manganese was shown by laboratory μXRF analysis to be concentrated in the inter-veinal areas of the leaves.
