•CHX@BMP-2-TH hydrogel was prepared by chemical cross-linking and physical blending.•The gelation of hydrogel was confirmed from the rheological perspective.•SA effectively regulated the gelation time and mechanical property of GP-CS hydrogel.•Favorable osteogenesis and antibacterial activity were investigated.
