•Simultaneous ultra-low emissions of NOx and particle emission were achieved.•RCCI with advanced fuel mix significantly reduces carbon footprint of ICE.•Optimal RCCI operating region is limited with ROPR and maximum pressure COV.•EGR rate and fuel reactivity govern engine-out emission characteristics.•GMF/MSS results reveal EGR reliant variation of particulate composition.
