Understanding the top-down fragmentation of 2D material in miscible liquid environment based on Hansen solubility parameters theory

•Hansen solubility parameters theory was adopted to predict the fragmentation yield of MoS2.•The optimal condition of the miscible liquid and related mechanism were studied.•The as-prepared few-layer samples showed purification capacity towards methylene blue.
