•Effects of EGR rate and its temperature on the combustion and emissions characteristics are compared.•Initial and main combustion phasing can be advanced with increase EGR temperature.•The reductions of HC and CO emissions are achieved with increasing EGR temperature, but sacrificing the NOx emissions.
