Abstract
Inclusive leadership fosters diversity and equally considers all individuals regardless of cultural background, age, sexual orientation, gender, disability, and race. An inclusive leader focuses on individuals at risk of exclusion by considering their needs, strengths, and goals, and by empowering them to succeed. The objective of this Workshop is to provide a venue for inclusive leadership skill building and mentorship among child and adolescent psychiatrists. Participants will be provided with education and guidance regarding effective skills in inclusive leadership through brief didactics and small group discussions facilitated by experienced leaders within the field. The Workshop will be structured around case-based, small group discussions focused on aspects of inclusive leadership. Brief didactics will review strategies for promoting inclusivity and diversity in the workplace through intentional actions and self-awareness. While didactic time is intentionally limited, these skills will be revisited and reinforced through case-based discussions in small groups led by experienced discussants who have held leadership positions within institutions and AACAP. Participants will leave the Workshop with a clear understanding of inclusive leadership. They will have developed essential skills and pearls related to self-awareness, cultural curiosity, emotional intelligence, and effective collaboration. Through case-based discussions, they will have enhanced their leadership skills and application of an inclusive approach. Participants will apply this knowledge to act consciously rather than react passively to positively impact those at risk for marginalization. These skills will allow participants to be more effective leaders when interacting with patients, parents, trainees, co-workers, administration, and community leaders. Minority physicians are underrepresented within the field of psychiatry and medicine as a whole. Barriers to diversity include structural racism and implicit and explicit biases that create an exclusive work environment. Child and adolescent psychiatrists have the opportunity to intentionally break down these barriers and create an environment of inclusivity that celebrates diversity through inclusive leadership.
