•The study would provide technical basis for the efficient utilization of water and nitrogen in arid regions.•Treatment I2N2 (3750 m3/hm2, 306.5 kg/hm2) achieves the maximum dry matter accumulation rate, and the highest DMA and yield.•The maximum DMA rate occurs at relatively effective accumulated temperature of 0.75-0.80 for all treatments.
