•Craving for drugs reduced following a 45-min exercise session and persisted 4-h post-exercise.•These reductions were equivalent for soccer and circuit training.•Mood was elevated after exercise and maintained 4-h post-exercise.•Higher levels of craving were associated with lower mood.•Comorbid depression and type of drug use disorder (opioids and cannabinoids) moderated the effects of exercise on craving.
