•Cu ions release form the OPtCu-NCs could mediate a series of Fenton-like reaction.•The generated •OH could effectively degrade colored organic pollutant.•The OPtCu-NCs have low toxicity at relative high concentration (2.0 mg/mL).•The OPtCu-NCs can improve the Fenton catalytic efficiency via synergetic photothermal effects.
