Evaluation of an eco-friendly flame retardant treatment applied to cellulosic textiles used for the conservation of historical tapestries

•Cellulosic fibres are widely used in tapestry conservation but are highly flammable.•Flame-retardants applied directly to the textile contribute to their degradation.•Flame-retardants should guarantee the eco-sustainability of textiles conservation.•Eco-friendly flame-retardant fabrics studied are suitable for tapestries storage.•Treatment modified properties; direct contact with textile should be avoid.
