Country-specific cost projections for renewable hydrogen production through off-grid electricity systems

•In Europe renewable H2 production costs may reduce to <2 €/kg in 2050.•Hybrid solar-wind electricity systems result in the lowest H2 production costs.•Individual off-grid electricity systems yield the lowest H2 cost with onshore wind.•Electrolyser cost reductions are more critical for H2 produced with PV than wind.
