•Indian species of the genus Monoceromyia Shannon (Diptera: Syrphidae) are revised.•Two new species are described: M. flavoscutata sp. nov. and M. nigra sp. nov.•Monoceromyia multipunctata is synonymized under M. polistoides.•Lectotypes are designated for Ceria patricia and Ceria tredecimpunctata.•An identification key to Indian species of Monoceromyia is provided.
