Pyrolysis behaviors of model compounds with representative oxygen-containing functional groups in coal over calcium

•Ca could exchange with the Ar–COOH and Ar–OH to form organic calcium.•Ca can increase the thermal stability of aromatic acids and phenolic compounds.•The organic calcium pyrolysis leads to the formation of ketone compounds.•Ca has little effect on the break mode of ether bond between two aromatic rings.
