Differences in soil water and nutrients under catchment afforestation and natural restoration shape herbaceous communities on the Chinese Loess Plateau

•Herbaceous communities were compared for a grassland and forestland catchment.•Natural restoration showed higher herbaceous diversity than that of afforestation.•Soil water and nutrient difference is the key reason for herbaceous difference.•Hillslope and gullies showed different patterns in water-related functional traits.
