Abstract
Current theories, frameworks, and measures informing the conception of well-being draw heavily from a nonminority worldview, which often neglect both cultural factors and frameworks. Using a qualitative design, we investigated how Spanish-speaking immigrant adults conceptualize and experience well-being from a psychosociocultural framework, an integrative approach addressing three interdependent dimensions: psychological (e.g., perception), social (e.g., relational connections), and cultural (values and worldviews). Latinx adults were recruited from a small town in the Midwest and invited to participate in semistructured interviews. Ten participants, five women and five men, took part in the study. The importance of experiencing inner tranquility, which stemmed from having knowledge that family members and loved one's were physically and emotionally well, emerged as the only theme from the psychological domain. From a social domain, connectedness (ability to share life with others) informed well-being. Cultural themes that emerged included responsibility to the family and having a relationship with God and faith. Our findings suggest that well-being for the current sample of Latinxs was holistic, interdependent (contingent on the wellness of others), spiritual, and centered on the value of familismo. Interventions aimed at increasing the well-being of Latinxs may be adapted to include community (family) healing strategies, strong focus on interpersonal factors, and religious-spiritual practices. Public Significance Statement The present study suggests that well-being among the Latinx community is informed by cultural values, factors, and practices. Additionally, it highlights the importance of a holistic approach to understanding well-being, one that incorporates the mind, body, and spirit.
