What determines the effectiveness of Pinyon-Juniper clearing treatments? Evidence from the remote sensing archive and counter-factual scenarios

•We used econometric approaches to analyze 302 unique pinyon-juniper treatments.•Treatments reduced trees and largely increased shrub and perennial herbaceous cover.•Soil-geomorphic and climate context influenced outcomes and treatment persistence.•High unexplained variance suggests caution is needed when applying results locally.
