Effect of calcium-binding compounds in acid whey on calcium removal during electrodialysis

•Calcium-binding compounds affect calcium removal during electrodialysis.•Compounds with higher pKa or at high concentration decrease calcium recovery.•At concentration of acid whey, lactate impact more than citrate calcium recovery.•Sugars were found to have minor effects compared with citrate or lactate.•Calcium complexes dissociate during electrodialysis.
