Characterizing plant root parameters with deep learning-based heat pulse method

•A deep learning-based heat pulse method was developed for root parameters characterization.•Numerical model was leveraged to generate the synthetic data in training deep learning models with virtually no cost.•Transfer learning was employed to adapting the knowledge gained from numerical model to actual real-world problems.•The proposed method gave satisfactory results for root fragment number identification and diameters estimation.
