•Deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) modifies the aging process of EN AW 6026.•DCT induces the reformation of dispersoids during natural aging.•DCT improved hardness and certain mechanical properties of aged EN AW 6026.•Homogenization temperature influences the effectiveness of DCT on the aging process.•Increased number and longer dispersoids and β’’ with DCT after artificial aging.
