Optimization of Non-uniform Flux Modulation Poles of a Dual-Stator Permanent Magnet Vernier Machine for Performance Improvement

In this paper, a design of a dual-stator permanent magnet Vernier machine (DSPMVM) with spoke-type rotor and non-uniform flux modulation poles (FMPs) is proposed. The aim of this study is to achieve high torque output by the flux-focusing machine topology on which the inner and outer stators have different number of pole teeth and FMP angle optimization. For robustness and easy manufacture, four rotor segments are replaced with stainless-steel support bars. Finite element analysis is used to optimize the non-uniform FMPs angle of the proposed machine. To verify its feasibility, the proposed DSPMVM was manufactured and tested. Both simulation and experiment results show the practical viability of the proposed DSPMVM.
