•Composite coating of HA-Cu was fabricated on titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNT) substrates.•TNT-HA-Cu exhibits strong antibacterial property against E. coli and S. aureus.•TNT-HA-Cu was biocompatible and could induce osteogenesis.
