Abstract
Many measures have been developed for improving the mechanical properties of cold asphalt emulsion mixtures. Utilizing the waterborne epoxy resin (WER) to enhance the performance of cold patch mixtures is interesting for some researchers. In the present study, the objective was to conduct a series of investigations of cold patch mixtures prepared with WER modified asphalt emulsion. The conventional testing procedures including consistency test, cohesion test, storage characteristic test, mechanical property test, high and low temperature test, and moisture susceptibility test were employed to determine the influences of WER on the construction properties and pavement performance of cold patch mixtures. The experimental scheme included two WERs and three doses. The test results indicated that the cold patch mixtures produced by WER modified asphalt emulsion was feasible and the WER type and dose affected the construction properties and performance. In addition, the use of WER would improve the early strength and shorten the curing time, while the loose cold patch mixtures still had good storage characteristics after a certain time interval. Meanwhile, the high-temperature stability and moisture stability of the cold patch mixtures increased as the dose of WER increased, but low-temperature characteristic exhibited adverse trends.
