•Co(II)phthalocyanine was noncovalently immobilized MWCNTs through axial coordination via pyridine-pyrene linker.•This material provided a superiorly enhanced electrocatalyzed performance signifying high efficiency.•Our target material we believe paves the way towards designing efficient energy production and storage devices.
