Abstract
•Gd3+ doped CdS core-CdSe shell nanostructure was applied as sensitizer in QDSSC.•Gd3+presence in CdS crystal lattice promotes the charge injection from QD to TiO2.•Light harvesting efficiency was increased by doping of Gd3+.•The CdSe QDs embraced the cores of Gd-doped CdS, extended light absorption range.•Conversion efficiency for TiO2/Gd-doped CdS@CdSe was higher than other photoanodes.
