Celebration of 150 years of Frejus railway Tunnel the oldest worldwide

Abstract
The Frejus railway tunnel turns 150 years old and is still in full service activity along the Turin-Lyon line, French-Italian Alps. At the time of its construction (1857-1871) it was the first base tunnel in the world crossing a large mountain range, as the Alps. This anniversary is celebrated with an international conference promoted and organized by the Accademia delle Scienze di Torino on October 6-7th, 2021, also honoring the six Academicians who contributed in various way to the achievement of the "Great Work". Attention is drawn to the celebrating event and principal themes planned for the four sessions of the conference: the Frejus railway tunnel and other old transalpine galleries; transalpine tunnels: 150 years of geological studies and applications; European transportation and mobility strategies: from the present to the future; the transalpine base tunnels: technical challenges.
