Occupational accidents in tunnel construction - A data analysis and operational proposals

The construction sector in Italy has traditionally been characterized by a high number of accidents at work, many of which unfortunately have a fatal outcome. Although progress has been made in safety management on construction sites in recent years, the number and severity of accidents require continued attention to be paid to finding solutions that will allow a radical reduction in accidents for the benefit of workers and companies in the sector. The construction sector of underground works and tunnels, although less invasively affected by the accidents phenomenon, presents room for improvement to work on in view of the expected growth of the sector and its importance for the economic recovery of the Italian economy. This study, developed with the contribution of ADAM AI Solutions, Inail Department of medicine, epidemiology, workplace and environmental hygiene and Societa Italiana Gallerie, starting from the available data and their interpretation and comparison at international level, aims to deepen the causal factors of accidents and propose operational solutions for their reduction.
