Abstract
Application of statistical analysis and quantitative genetics varies among sugarcane breeding programs around the world. Some methods and concepts are difficult to understand for those without an educational background in statistics. This paper is mainly targeted at readers with little prior experience in statistical analysis and quantitative genetics and aims to encourage further study and application of these potentially useful topics in sugarcane breeding and research. A basic introduction to the application of statistical analysis and quantitative genetics in sugarcane breeding programs is provided. These areas of science are potentially valuable to sugarcane breeders and researchers, for assessing data quality, interpreting and reporting results, making better selections, and designing efficient breeding and selection methods.
