•A CH4 leakage source location method with an inverse optimized model was proposed.•A near-infrared ppbv-level OA-ICOS CH4 sensor was developed.•Simulation analysis was carried out to verify the performance of the IPSO algorithm.•Filed experiments verified the effectiveness and reliability of the location method.
