•SnS2 nanoparticles are synthesized by hydrothermal method.•SnS2 nanoparticle-based gas sensors have high response to NO2 at room temperature.•SnS2 nanoparticle-based gas sensor has a fast recovery speed of up to 1s for NO2.•This work is of great significance for the fast NO2 detection in real time.
