•Seasons affect the values of all the indicators (LCI, NDVI, SDD, RWC).•The sensitivity of the non-destructive indicator is higher than the destructive.•High and medium irrigation frequency show higher conversion of water into biomass.•High frequency shows higher crop water productivity at the end of vegetative cycle.
