•Different morphologies of Mn3O4 nanostructures are synthesized through LPDD.•Electrical field orientation drives the Mn3O4 nanostructures formation.•Ostwald ripening effect dominants the growth process of Mn3O4 nano-octahedra.•Hydrothermal effect assists the formation of porous Mn3O4 nano-sheets.•The nano-sheet Mn3O4/carbon composite shows an excellent super capacity behavior.
