Abstract
•Carbon dots (CDs) doped with distinct nitrogen chemical states were loaded on g-C3N4.•The electrons-holes separation was greatly promoted by pyrrole N-doped CDs.•Theoretical calculation reveals that pyrrole N has the suitable H adsorption energy.•Pyrrole N-doped CDs/g-C3N4 exhibited the best photocatalytic HER of 3028 μmol h−1 g−1.
